研究方向

  • · 1) Cell interaction inside the organ of Corti:
The interaction between cells inside the organ of Corti, which is important for understanding the mechanism behind the cochlear amplification and compression, and the progress and effect of hair cell regeneration for hearing loss treatments.

  • · 2) Cochlear mechanics:
Developing a series of methods to investigate the fluid coupling, wave propagation and mechanical response in the cochlea.

  • · 3) Hearing defects and hearing preservation:
Understand the effect of hearing defects, hair cell loss, for example, to improve hearing rehabilitation and residual hearing preservation.

  • · 4) Personalised cochlear modeling for clinical diagnosis:
Extending current inner ear modeling methodology to fit individual's clinical requirement.

个人简介

Dr. Guangjian Ni received his B.S. degrees with a double major, Thermal Energy and Dynamic Engineering/Industrial Engineering, from Tianjin University, the first University in China established in 1895 as Peiyang University, in 2003. Dr. Ni jointed the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR), University of Southampton from 2009 as a recipient of Rayleigh Scholarship and Marie Curie Fellowship and received his PhD degree (supervised by FREng Prof. Stephen J. Elliott) for a thesis on “Fluid Coupling and Waves in the Cochlea” in 2012. Since then, He was appointed by the ISVR as a research fellow (October 2012 – December 2015) and then a senior research fellow (December 2015 - June 2017).  From August 2017, Dr. Ni has been appointed as an Associate Professor at Department of Biomedical Engineering, College of Precision Instruments and Optoelectronics Engineering, Tianjin University.

Dr. Guangjian Ni's research interests include understanding hearing mechanism and hearing loss in order to improve the treatments for deafness, especially combining inner ear anatomy with physiological and mechanical theories to investigate the cochlear mechanics (cell interaction, cochlear amplifier) and sound wave propagation. Dr. Ni has published more than 50 peer-reviewed articles in well-known journals including Hearing ResearchJournal of the Acoustical Society of AmericaJournal of Sound and VibrationJournal of the Royal Society Interface, and various international conferences proceedings including Mechanics of Hearing, International Congress on AcousticsInner Ear BiologyIEEE Bioinformatics & BioengineeringInternational Congress on Sound and Vibration. Dr. Ni's research work was recognised by the award of two prestigious honours: The Sir James Lighthill Best Paper Award and The Spoendlin Award in July and September 2014 respectively. These are two of the most prestigious awards for early career scientists in the field of acoustic and inner ear biology.
