Honorary Professorship Conferred on Professor Miroslaw Jan Skibniewski

On March 19, 2018, Miroslaw Jan Skibniewski, an Academician of the Russian Academy of Engineering and the Polish Academy of Engineering and Professor of the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) and other delegates paid a visit to TJU. President Zhong Denghua and representatives of the School of Civil Engineering and relevant offices met with the guests at the Peiyangyuan Campus.

President Zhong highlighted the development of the advanced disciplines, including architecture, chemical engineering and technology and civil engineering. He expected that both sides would have the opportunity to deepen their exchange and cooperation, in order that faculty and students could have more opportunities to exchange and cooperate with each other.

Professor Skibniewski was conferred as an Honorary Professor of TJU and he showed his gratitude for this honor. He said that TJU enjoys a good reputation in the U.S., and many students and professors who come from TJU are doing very well. He hoped there would be more opportunities for exchange with TJU faculty and students, promote cooperation of TJU and American institutions of higher learning, and boost the cooperation of China and the U.S. in many fields, including environmental engineering and management of large-scale infrastructure construction.

After the conferring ceremony, Professor Skibniewski delivered a lecture, Scholarly Papers for High Impact Journals: How to Become a Successful Author at the Peiyang Lecture Hall, in which he shared with the faculty and students his experience in scientific research and career planning. He communicated with them in academic terms and gave detailed answers to the questions posed by the students, such as how to choose when job hunting, starting up a business and doing further scientific research and how to prepare and write high-quality papers. The audience applauded his wonderful answers.

Professor Skibniewski thought highly of the research achievements of School of Civil Engineering during his visit there. He pointed out that the engineering examples and research achievements in China have provided significant references, and he wished that both sides strive toward publishing papers in high-level journals. He also mentioned that it is necessary not only to pay attention to writing technique in writing a scientific paper, but also to make the paper an interesting one.

Professor Miroslaw Jan Skibniewski became an academician of the Russian Academy of Engineering in 2006 and of the Polish Academy of Engineering in 2013. He is a Professor of UMD and an expert in the application of flexible building, building automation and robotics in civil engineering design and construction. He also gives attention to the application of information technology in project management.
