On the morning of January 24, the opening ceremony of Tianjin University 2019 Engineering Science Winter Camp was held on the Weijin Road Campus. After the expert group’s review and screening, 231 high middle school students from 157 high schools from 26 provinces and cities became winter camp members. Held over a week, they listened to lectures on science and technology frontiers by famous teachers, received practical research training, participated in planning career management, and experienced a series of university activities themed, “Meeting Engineering Science”.

Li Bin, Deputy Director of the Office of Academic Affairs at Tianjin University, Party Secretary Wang Hailong and Vice Dean Hu Xiaodong of the School of Precision Instruments and Optoelectronics Engineering attended the event. Li Bin mentioned that Tianjin University specializes in many fields such as science, engineering, economics, management, literature, law, medicine, education, art, and philosophy, among others, with the comprehensive development concept of "Strengthening Engineering, Promoting Science, Boosting Arts and developing Medicine" towards the future. At the end of 2017, the university launched the “World-class Undergraduate Education 2030 Action Plan”. In the 2018 evaluation of undergraduate teaching work by the Ministry of Education, Tianjin University unanimously received high praise from the expert group.

Wang Hailong remarked that graduates from the engineering science experimental class of Tianjin University went on to famous universities at home and abroad for further study. He hoped that the campers will learn to cooperate with others while thinking independently in the winter camp activities, and enjoy a good time at Tianjin University.

Hu Xiaodong systematically demonstrated the sixteen research directions from the school’s three disciplines and encouraged the campers to focus on cultivating multi-disciplinary cross-integration capabilities and to plan their future development in advance.

Yu Yi spoke as a camper representative. She reviewed her experiences with TJU and her research, expressed her enthusiasm for TJU and the excitement of being able to participate in the winter camp. She hoped to learn from each other and make progress together during this winter camp, and said that she would cherish the opportunity of studying at Tianjin University and to strive to become a TJUer.

Yan Cheng, a student from engineering science experimental class of the School of Precision Instruments and Optoelectronics Engineering in 2014, spoke as a TJU student representative. He shared his experience of studying and living in the engineering class for four years and said that the school provides the platform and resources for all class members to participate in extracurricular science and technology practice activities. He hoped everyone will fully devote themselves to the winter camp activities and continue to work hard to make their dreams come true.

Since 2012, the School of Precision Instruments and Optoelectronics Engineering commenced the “Engineering Science” summer camp and winter camp activities within national key middle schools. It aims to enhance the understanding of middle school students on various engineering disciplines of Tianjin University and the School. Campers who have performed well in summer camps and winter camps can qualify for entry into the Engineering Science Experimental Class of the School of Precision Instruments and Optoelectronics Engineering at Tianjin University with exemption from the entrance examination. The 2019 Engineering Science Winter Camp is the seventh session. Up to now, the summer camp and winter camp have recruited 1,682 campers.
