Symposium on the Joint University and Industry Efforts to Cultivate Talents

On March 22, the Symposium on the Joint Efforts to Cultivate Talents by both the University and Industries was held at the Tianjin University School of Civil Engineering. The deputy deans of the School, including Professor Gao Xifeng, Professor Ma Bin and Professor Shi Yanchao attended the meeting and exchanged ideas with representatives from more than 30 companies. Ms. Li Jinglin, Vice Party Secretary of the School, hosted the meeting.

On behalf of the School of Civil Engineering, Professor Gao Xifeng expressed a warm welcome to the industry representatives. The talent training and scientific research of the School of Civil Engineering are closely related to engineering practices. The school has always attached great importance to the interaction with industry. With the development of intelligent construction and artificial intelligence, the emerging engineering education advocates a cooperative education system that involves both production and education, urging universities and industry to join hands in cultivating engineering talents. The School of Civil Engineering hopes to strengthen cooperation and exchanges with outstanding enterprises, and establish a mechanism for information integration, resource sharing, and co-winning cooperation.

The Party Secretary Li Jinglin gave a brief introduction of the school’s history, culture, disciplines, research development, and talent training system. She pointed out that to nurture talents in accordance with employers’ demands, industry must join in the training process in the manner of corporate tutors, alumni forums, and giving high-level lectures while the school will foster innovative entrepreneurship cultivation, science and technology competitions, internship practices, and more in-depth cooperation with companies in scientific research.

Professor Ma Bin introduced the undergraduate teaching evaluation of Tianjin University. Based on the goal of talent training, he deeply interpreted the undergraduate curriculum of the School of Civil Engineering, introduced the practice arrangement and disciplines like Civil Engineering, Hydraulic and Hydro-power, Harbour Waterway and Coastal Engineering as well as Naval and Ocean Engineering. Professor Shi Yanchao elaborated on the postgraduate curriculum. The practical application ability is an important criterion for measuring the professional level of masters and PhDs. The School of Civil Engineering implements the postgraduate engineering practical application enhancement plan, and it needs to further build a platform to promote the school-enterprise cooperation.

Industry representatives think highly of the students cultivated by TJU. Representatives said that Tianjin University graduates have a solid professional foundation, strong learning ability, high level of professionalism and outstanding comprehensive quality, and can take on important responsibilities in various positions.

The participants involved more than 30 companies such as China Construction Group, China Shipbuilding Group, China Communications Construction Group and China Railway Construction Group, all of which are key employment units for students from the School of Civil Engineering.
