Prof. LIU Yi and Prof. ZHENG Wang from the School of Earth System Science received the 18th Hou Defeng Award for Young Scientists in Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry as was announced in early November.

The award is set up in honor of Prof. Hou Defeng, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, for his notable contribution to the development of geology and geochemistry in China. It also aims to encourage outstanding young geoscientists with distinguished and creative achievements in the fields of mineralogy, petrology, and geochemistry.

Liu Yi, the winner of the National Outstanding Youth Science Foundation, is mainly engaged in geochemistry and global change research. He has published 35 academic papers in high-level journals such asNature Communication, ES&T, GCA, GRL, JGRandGPC, and some of his research results have been written into the national major scientific research projects and cited in the United States’ National Strategy Report of the National Academy of Sciences on Ocean Acidification. His two papers published in Nature Communication and ES&T were selected as research highlights bySciencemagazine in 2015 and 2016 respectively. He won the first Liu Dongsheng Outstanding Youth Award and Wang Kuancheng Award for Educating Talents.

Zheng Wang graduated from the University of Science and Technology of China with a bachelor's degree and a Ph.D. from Trent University in Canada. He successively served as a postdoctoral fellow and assistant researcher at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the United States, the University of Toronto in Canada and Arizona State University in the United States. In 2018, he was selected as the long-term professor of the "Peiyang Scholars" Talent Program of Tianjin University. His main research is metal stable isotope geochemistry, focusing on the metal isotope fractionation mechanism, mercury biogeochemical cycle, and the reconstruction of paleoenvironmental evolution. He has published more than 30 papers in high-impact journals such asPNAS, Environmental Science and Technology, Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, Global Biogeochemical Cycles, andJ ournal of Analytical Atomic Spectrometry.
