Liu Jianing, as a major in Engineering Management graduated from the College of Management and Economics in the summer of 2020. She obtained a recommendation to pursue her graduate study at Tsinghua University’ Department of Construction Management for her excellent performance at school. She got a weighted score of 93.17(GPA3.91) and ranked first in her major. She even minored in a double degree of finance at Nankai University and led two innovation training programs for college students. Liu has earned a lot of prizes, including "National Scholarship", "Tianjin University Merit Student", "Tianjin University Outstanding Student Leader". She was fond of painting, music and passed the tenth grade of amateur zither.

A Diligent Learner

Liu holds firm to the belief that genius is nothing but labor and diligence. “Only if you devote yourself wholeheartedly and assiduously to the study and make unremitting endeavor to learn, can you make progress,” Liu said.

In her freshman year, she set a goal for herself. “What matters is not test scores but the knowledge one grasps.” Liu was a hard worker and a good reader.

Out of passion and aspiration for engineering disciplines, she has shown great enthusiasm in all the courses of engineering structure and engineering mechanics. She often held a book thinking about several mechanics problems before going to bed, and sometimes found it difficult to fall asleep because of a proof problem.

Her efforts paid off. For nearly every course, she cored over 95 points, and even 100 points for some courses related to basic mathematics and science.

An Active Researcher

In the sophomore year, Liu began to participate in the management science research club. It became her routine to read a piece of high-quality English document every week and master a management theory. Then, she joined the National College Student Innovation Program and served as the project leader. Her team carried out the research on "Intelligent Matching System for Shared Parking Spaces Based on Dynamic BIM Technology" and established a set of matching and pricing algorithms for shared parking spaces under the guidance of Professor Shen Jiang.

In the third year of her undergraduate study, she participated in the Undergraduate Innovation and Entrepreneurship Program with the "Research on the Dynamic Coupling Risk Assessment of the Typical Lifeline System of the Beijing Winter Olympics", studying the operational risks of three typical lifeline systems of the Beijing Winter Olympics including heat, gas and electricity.

The research work gave her a new perspective to understand the world in depth. She drew strength from the great thinking of frontier experts and scholars and was greatly fascinated by the research in the field of engineering management. By and by, she developed the ambition to pursue her postgraduate study.

A Passionate Dream-seeker

Liu Jianing lived a fulfilling college life. Besides her academic life, she enjoyed her life pretty much with various extracurricular activites.

She joined the campus student TV station where she mastered the skills of video clip, and began to make her own vlog. She was with the campus band and going to the new campus for band rehearsal every week was her most anticipated and happiest time. “Whenever I felt stressed out, I would pick up a musical instrument and played a song. It really helps,” Liu said.

Talking about her future, Liu said that she hoped to go in for city construction and smart management. “Whatever I do, I will always be guided by the university motto, to seek truth from facts. It has become my life doctrine,” Liu Jianing noted.
