Creative Drawings by Medicos at Tianjin University

Arts and Culture

Generally speaking, the hands of medicos equipped with scalpels tend to save lives, while at Tianjin University, they can also create numerous attractive drawings. Recently, the Medical Department at TJU held the 1st Anatomical Drawings Competition for Medicos, from which a great number of unique human organ sketches gained instant popularity among campus.

01 The Life of Doctoring as a Play

By Qin Jiafan, 2019-class undergraduate majoring in Clinical Medicine

Introduction: Human bones (the left half) and a Chinese opera player (the right half) make up the whole drawing. The combination not only adds more artistic elements, but also signifies the perfect match between clinical medicine and Chinese traditional culture. The life of doctoring is just like a play, as it takes years of hard work for both to deliver a 10-minute exceptional performance on stage or complete a successful operation. Since being a doctor is a lifelong career, it requires constant pursuit and exploration.

02 Necrotic Tissues Removed, Strong Muscles Grow

By Mao Yufei, 2019-class undergraduate majoring in Clinical Medicine

Introduction: On infertile ground, a strong-muscled hand is holding up hope. Entangled arteries and veins stretch to fingertips, bringing blooming Begonia. The work shows the new birth of medicinal majors at TJU, with the first blooming flowers for New Medicine.

03 Begonia and Brain

By Shiyu, 2020-class PhD student majoring in biomedical engineering

Introduction: 12 pairs of cranial nerves and their nuclei function ubiquitously in our daily life. The left part of the work mainly presents the ubiety of some nuclei in the brainstem, of which part of cerebellum is covered by spring Begonia. And the right part demonstrates the connection between the brain and cerebellum, also known as three pairs of cerebellar peduncles. Colorful drawing injects interest into originally boring learning of brainstem anatomical structure.

04 Flowers Emerging from a Heart

By Liu Xinting, 2019-class undergraduate majoring in biomedical engineering

Introduction: Themed around the dialogue between technology and humans, the work combines a cardiogram and a living heart with clear blood vessel distribution. It not only demonstrates the sufficiency of blood in a third-dimension way, but shows signs of vigor and vitality. A lifelike heart in the center is the main body of the drawing, on which flowers of Purple Leaf Plum are in bloom. A cardiogram with normal cycles is presented as the background, and name notes of heart components lie on the upper layer of the work.

05 The Heart of the Oath

By Wu Chengjian, 2019-class undergraduate majoring in Clinical Medicine

Introduction: The ring of oath decorated with a heart highlights the true love for medicine. The work consists of a heart-embedded ring and a holding hand, symbolizing honesty and trust. The left peony and the right peach blossom imply two ancient love stories of the Peony Pavilion and the Peach Blossom Fan. The combination of English, Chinese ancient poetry and human organs shows that medicine is a time-honored discipline encompassing Chinese and Western medicine, and that medicine unites natural science, social science and humanities together.

06 Choice by Myself or Parents

By Xu Simin, 2019-class undergraduate majoring in Clinical Medicine

Introduction: The girl wears a dancing shoe on her right foot, while on the left one, she wears nothing. The bare left foot is totally her own choice without any external interference. As every individual has the right to persue the life they want, we can eventually become the ideal ones that we have imaged before.

07 War, Future and Hand

By Tang Haihan, 2019-class undergraduate majoring in Clinical Medicine

Introduction: The integration of human organs and mechanical elements leads us to the future, showing the mixed beauty of medicine and industry. The flower and the bullet, on the opposite side of the hand, reveal a cruel beauty in a contrastive way: survival and death, goodliness and war. Meanwhile, while the mutilated hand without a thumb tells the cruelty of wars, the remaining fingers show a pose of victory. The victory pose reveals a strong will for struggle, as well as a bright hope in any difficulty.

08 Nice Cup

By Qi Wangzhi, 2020-class undergraduate in the trial class of New Medicine at Hengrui Academy

Introduction: A hand with tactical gloves is picking up a skull, sighing “A nice skull cup indeed”. The work intends to condemn inhumane behaviors like killing innocent civilians and insulting bodies, and to satirize unjust wars of aggression in the name of “human rights and freedom”

09 Flying

By Wu Xiaona, 2019-class undergraduate majoring in Clinical Medicine

Introduction: Brain is a vital human organ where mental activities, learning and memorizing happen. For various reasons, people tend to be stuck into certain fixed ways of thinking when learning or working. The work chooses a hot-air ballon as the substitute of a human brain, in the hope of getting rid of fixed mindset and then thinking freely.

10 To the Stars

By Liu Jieqing, 2019-class undergraduate majoring in Clinical Medicine

Introduction: Anatomic hand bones and some hand nerves are the main body of the work. Outstretched hand bones, nerves and stars suggest human’s aspiration, individuals’ inner motives and outer perceptions, as well as brightness and unknowns in the future, respectively. The work indicates our persistent pursuit of knowledge and exploration for unknowns in the historical course of human development. It also shows unremitting efforts by TJU in discipline and scientific research.

Li Xiaohong, the deputy dean of Clinical Medicine Department at TJU, expressed her expectation that these creative drawings could help students discover the beauty of anatomy, medicine and lives, therefore inspiring their great passion for medical exploration and consolidating their understanding for related knowledge. In the near future, they will grow into outstanding medical workers with critical thinking, warm hearts and great creativity.

How surprisingly artistic the complicated anatomy could be, like Begonia on the heart and outstretched hand bones to the universe!
