Afelumo Ademolawa John is a Nigerian with keen interest in the cultural values and norms of any country visited. John graduated with a Bachelor of Technology in Applied Geology from the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), Nigeria. He then went to Zhejiang University in China under the Chinese Government Scholarship (Marine scholarship) and graduated with a master’s degree in Marine Geology.

While studying at Zhejiang University, John showed overall excellence in academic study and published 3 papers in SCI(Science Citation Index) journals , being the first author for one paper and the co-author for the other two.

He has attended many culture exchange programs and learned much about Chinese culture, traditons and people. In 2018, he participated in the 4th Study and Cultural Tour of Marine Scholarship of China held in Qingdao, and graced the first International Symposium on Indian Ocean Earth Science in 2019. Then John won the geo-host support award at the 36th International Geological Congress (IGC) in 2020.

After he graduated from Zhejiang University, John was invited by Prof. Su Rongxin to continue his doctoral study at Tianjin University’s School of Marine Science and Technology. He was awarded the Peiyang Future Scholar Scholarship for his outstanding research experience on seafloor geology and tectonics.

“A number of researches have been carried out extensively on the continental lithosphere with little focus on marine domain, which hosts massive mineral resources yet to be explored,” said John. At present, he is studying the thermal processes and geodynamics conditions of the oceanic lithosphere using spatial data analysis and computational modelling with a vision to make outstanding contributions to geoscience community as a research scholar.“Tianjin University is a citadel of knowledge where this shall be achieved.”

This is John who loves travelling and exploring new knowledge and ideas wherever possible.
