Abstract:This paper describes an energy efficient wideband FM transceiver system by introducing a chirp-UWB transmission with bulk pulse-position modulation (PPM). In contrast to conventional chirp modulated UWB transceivers that transmit only 1 bit in a pulse clock, the proposed position embedded transceiver manages to transmit 1.3 bit on average in one pulse clock period, improving spectral efficiency by 30% The transceiver designed in 0.18 mu m CMOS achieves the energy efficiency of 1.5nJ/b for the transmitter and 23nJ/b for the receiver at the data rate of 1.6Mb/s.
