Brief Introduction

NanoCat@TJU

Dr. Shi Hu is the group leader of NanoCat in the school of science, Tianjin University. He obtained his PhD from Tsinghua University, Beijing in 2012 and worked as postdoc fellow in NC State University and Penn State Univeristy hereafter. He has worked on the controllable synthesis and property investigation of nanomaterials for more than 10 years and published more than 20 SCI papers, including a few on the top-tier journals like J Am Chem Soc, Nano Lett, Adv Mater and Chem Soc Rev. with overall citation number over 1400. (Jan. 24, 2019, Google Scholar data). He is selected into the Project of Thousand Youth Talents of Tianjin (2016) and Project of Peiyang Young Scholars (2018).

He chose to work at Tianjin University since the summer of 2016 and has assembled a vibrant team of 13 graduate students and 5 undergraduates by the time of 2019. The members come from China, Pakistan, Malaysia and Zimbabwe. Their current research interests focus on the development of functional nanomaterials towards the energy, environment and food challenges, which include:

1. Nanostructured Electrocatalyst and Photocatalyst for CO2 Reduction;

2. Nanostructured Electrocatalyst and Photocatalyst for Nitrogen Fixation;

3. Nanostructured Electrocatalyst and Photocatalyst for Water Splitting;

4. Nanomaterials Sensor Materials for Hazardous-Gas;

The research are based on a close academic cooperation with Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, Institute of Physics CAS and Xi’an Jiaotong University.

Team NanoCat own their own Transmission Electron Microscope and essential equipment for the research including gas chromatograph, UV-Vis spectrophotometer, electrochemical workstation and gas-sensing evaluation platform. Synthetic tools for the hydrothermal synthesis and chemical vapor deposition are available including ovens, furnaces, Schlenk line and mini-glovebox. The weekly groupmeeting are given in English.

International students pursuing a PhD and Master degree are encouraged to contact Dr. Hu by himself through rychushi@qq.com. We would like to have self-motivated students join us with the background of chemistry, physics, chemical engineering and/or material science. Fluency of English is required and mastery of Chinese will be very helpful.
