Recently, the first “Bu Dongmei Scholarships” were ceremoniously awarded at the Peiyang Park Campus. Twenty students were awarded the scholarship.
The Director of Alumni and Foundation Affairs Department and the secretary general of the Peiyang Education Development Foundation Li Xiumin introduced the background to the scholarship. She explained that the scholarship was based on the Tianjin University Bu Dongmei Education Foundation sponsored by Ms Bu. Ms Bu graduated from Tianjin University and she chose to work at Tianjin University after graduation. She comes from an ethnic minority of China. At the 120th anniversary of Tianjin University last year, she proposed that she would sponsor a fund named “Tianjin University Bu Dongmei Education Foundation”, and she would allocate 1.24 million yuan to award excellent minority students, as well as cultivating innovative talent in the precision instrument discipline. She was willing to personally contribute to the cultivation of innovative talent at the university.
Many students, especially minority students showed great interest in the scholarship since the day it was initiated. In addition to the traditional way of selection by schools and in order to encourage more students to apply for the scholarship and choose the best candidate students, students were encouraged to recommend themselves. Students who were qualified could apply for the scholarship directly. They were able to do it through the Student Financial Assistance Center. Altogether 103 students applied for the scholarship. After being assessed by the scholarship committee, 20 excellent students from minorities were awarded the scholarship. The 20 students did well in their study and developed in an all-round way. They came from 13 nationalities of 13 provinces.
In the speech by Vice President Feng Yaqing, she extended her gratitude to Ms. Bu for setting up the scholarship, and then congratulated the 20 students. She introduced the traditions of the university: “love is the foundation, strictness is the priority, and circumspection is the guarantee”.
The representative of the winners of this scholarship Hasiyeti Yesibolati, a girl of the Kazakh nationality from Xinjiang whose family is not that rich, said, “The difficulties on the way did not frustrate me. All the hardships I’ve gone through remind me of my dream. It was lucky for me to have an opportunity to study at Tianjin University.”
Duo Deng of the Zang nationality is from Tibet. He shared his experience and described his achievements when he attended student organizations. Yuan Zhe of the Korean nationality from Jilin has learned several second languages. As for him, professional study and scientific research were both important. He is a counselor of the Peer Psychological Support Center and the director of the International Exchange Center of the Graduate Students Union. He has won a National Scholarship and a Peiyang Talent Scholarship. He said: “The development of minority students has its unique characteristics. Minority students need different help and have different concerns in their different stages of development. The scholarship provided by Ms. Bu is a big inspiration for minority students in their study and future career.”
After listening to the experience of the students, Ms. Bu affectionately explained the reason why she sponsored such a scholarship. Ms. Bu was from Daur nationality. She was born in the Horqin Grassland. As a minority student, she felt strongly that she benefited a lot from national policies on minorities. Therefore she wished she could pass on the gratitude to the younger generation. In the end, she said: “You are in the prime years of your life, which gives me the feeling of going back to my college days. You give me both inspiration and strength.” Her words, simple but sincere, won the applause of the audience. After the speech, representatives of the winners presented a “Longmen” couplet composed by them in order to convey their gratitude for Ms. Bu’s caring for students’ growth and for her support for the development of Tianjin University.
Since the founding of this scholarship in 2016, there will be 20 minority students awarded every year, with the amount of 5,000 yuan going to each student. The 20 winners this year were from 13 ethnic minorities, including Mongol, Tibet, Uyghur, Kazakh, Korean, Daur, She, and Tujia nationalities.
