Professor Shan Ping Receives Chinese Lifetime Award for Welding

At the recently concluded 20th National Academic Conference on Welding, Professor Shan Ping, Former President of Tianjin University, proudly received the Chinese Lifetime Award for Welding.

The Chinese Lifetime Award for Welding is the highest honor in China’s welding academia. In 2001 the Welding Institute of the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society established the Award to commend the welding workers' outstanding contribution to the development of welding in China.

As a professor at the School of Materials Science and Engineering of Tianjin University, Professor Shan is one of the key specialists in welding at the university. Professor Shan Ping's pioneering work in the research of the relationship between crack opening displacement and strain, uses wide plate tests to provide a theoretical basis for the safety assessment of welding vessels. The results have been adopted by the National Standard of Pressure Vessel Safety Assessment.

In the late 1980s, Professor Shan was appointed to take charge of the project of designing and manufacturing the pulsed flash butt welding machine for gas pipelines, which was first made in China.

The 20th National Academic Conference on Welding was held in Lanzhou from October 13-15, 2015. The theme of the conference was Advanced Welding Manufacturing and Control Technology.
