On September 24 to 29, 2015, the team of students from the School of Life Sciences at Tianjin University (TJU) competed in the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition. They successfully received the awards of twoFirstsof singles, aGold Medal, and aNomination.
It was the first time that the School of Life Sciences had supervised a team representing Tianjin University at the IGEM competition. The supervisor of the team was Professor Yang Haitao from the School of Life Sciences, and colleague Wang Zefang as the assistant.
The team included students Wang Haofeng, Han Bowen, Liu Jiashu, Li Yuchen, Zhao Qing, Wang Yang, Hu Jinxin, and Zong Junjiefrom the School of Life Sciences, students Bao Dongqi, Chi Heng, Chen Zexiang, Han Xuan, Dong Xuemei, Li Shubin, and Zhang Yuwei from the School of Chemical Engineering and Technology, and students Shao Ketong, Yu Junjie, Wang Hua, Yin Xiangyu, Peng Yige, and Wang Chenmao from Qiushi College.
The team’s project was on the application of a protein. A protein can be applied to research and the daily lives in numerous aspects – chip fixation, protein purification, plastic degradation, and modification of protein, which makes commercialization of the application possible. After continuously working without a rest, the team harvested two firsts in the singles draw and a gold medal, displaying the enthusiasm in research and innovation skills of Tianjin University students.
